The year 1856 is famous in the UK for what is known as 'The Big Stink', when a particularly hot summer caused stench and stink across the capital from untreated raw river sewage. Some 100 years later in the 1950's, the BNR system ("Bacterial" Nutrient Removal) was born, where bacteria was introduced to treat the sewage with the large aeration ponds. But - untreated Raw sewage together with GHG methane, nitrous oxide with toxic hydrogen suplhide bad egg stench and fire risk, toxic sludge etc still entered the rivers and atmosphere etc! Human health risk.
Problem is the BNR system itself relies on raw human sewage as food for the bacteria, so there is always an excess of 'food' (raw sewage) left over! !
It is these BNR bacteria that produce the toxic GHG methane, nitrous oxide, CO2, concentrated sulphuric acid in our communities... as they munch their way through the raw sewage. Billions (Giga tonnes) of C02e are produced from this 75 year old tech process.
So in 2026 today !!...this explains why after heavy storms and overflows that sewage still spreads into our rivers, beaches etc and kill or contaminate everything in it's path, and we are still pumping GHG!
