So using this 75 year old technology worldwide, why is the world in 2026 still pumping hundreds of millions of tonnes of C02e emissions into the atmosphere and sewaage into waterways? Read on:
The year 1856 is famous in the UK for what is known as 'The Big Stink', when a particularly hot summer caused stench and stink across the capital from untreated raw river sewage. Some 100 years later in the 1950's, the BNR system ("Bacterial" Nutrient Removal) was born, where bacteria was introduced to treat the sewage with the large aeration ponds. But - untreated Raw sewage together with GHG methane and nitrous oxide still entered the rivers and atmosphere etc!
Problem is the BNR system itself relies on raw human sewage as food for the bacteria, so there is always an excess of 'food' (raw sewage) left over! !
It is these BNR bacteria that produce the toxic GHG methane, nitrous oxide and CO2 as they munch their way through the raw sewage. Billions (Giga tonnes) of C02e are produced from this 75 year old tech process.
So in 2026 today !!...this explains why after heavy storms and overflows that sewage still spreads into our rivers, beaches etc and kill or contaminate everything in it's path, and we are still pumping GHG!
